News from Latin America
by Luis E. Alday

Beijing, ChinaVery important topics related to ACHD were discussed by several ISACHD members and specialists from different countries at the 2010 World Congress of Cardiology in Beijing, China, from 16 - 19 June. On June 17 took place the Symposium "ACHD: a rapidly growing population" chaired by Drs Luis Alday (Argentina) and Ling Han (China). Dr Alday gave an "Introduction to the subject" and stressed the importance of registries for ACHD. Dr Hector Maisuls (Argentina) spoke about "Transition from pediatric to adult care" provoking an interesting discussion from the audience. Dr Koichiro Niwa (Japan) reported the experience of his center in "Infective endocarditis" which questions the recent controversial guidelines por endocarditis prophylaxis. Professor Junbao Du (China) gave an excellent update over the state of the art for the management of "Pulmonary hypertension and Eisenmenger syndrome". Finally, Professor Mary Cannobio (United States), expressed her expert views about "Pregnancy and contraception in ACHD".

A Clinical Seminar on "Acute care of adults with congenital heart disease" chaired by Ms Laura Hayman (United States) and Catriona Jennings (United Kingdom) was held on June 19 with the following speakers and topics. Ms Yoshiko Mizuno (Japan) addressed the "Quality of life issues in the ACHD". Dr Philip Moons (Belgium) talked about "Eisenmenger syndrome: keeping them safe in the hospital". Ms Dorothy Pearson (United States) dealt with the "Clinical outcomes: clinically managing the post surgical ACHD patient". The session was closed by Ms Mary Cannobio (United States) who talked about the "Standard of care in pregnancy and delivery: creating a normalcy in a field of abnormality". All presentations were excellent and followed with great interest and discussion by the attendance. There is no doubt that this event will develop great attention for the care of ACHD patients in China where this subspecialty has still not been duly considered.
